On Wednesday, January 5th, The Intelligencer had an opinion piece “Black American triumphs outweigh tragedies…” in which the author writes: “I have always been intrigued by the stories of Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma… where Black Americans from our past thrived…"
Mentioning Tulsa as a triumph with no mention of the massacre of that same community on May 30, 1921 where 175 innocent Black Americans were killed allows the author to pretend that the atrocity did not outweigh the triumph.
If the author is ignorant of that event, there is no better example of why we need to teach the horrific history of white supremacy and its ongoing oppression. Perhaps the Heritage Foundation where the author is employed would benefit from lessons.
